Introduction of the Hungarian Water Utility Association (MAVÍZ)

The Hungarian Water Utility Association (abbreviation: MAVÍZ) is a unique organisation in Hungary in the field of public water service and water industry, representing the interests of the water utilities and motivating development.

Our Mission

The Hungarian Water Utility Association is a socially organized professional body, with independent legal entity, which was established in 1990 with a view to act as an independent intermediate, harmonizing and representing interests of the industry, offering trade developing and engineering services.

Membership

Approximately 400 public water utilities operate within different structural frames in Hungary. 100 of these are affiliated members of the Hungarian Water Utility Association, which assure 95 % of the public water service of the country (MAVÍZ members: WATER UTILITIES). Moreover, 100 affiliated members represent the water industry and trade (MAVÍZ members: WATER INDUSTRY).

Main activities

Efforts of the Hungarian Water Utility Association taken on coordinating the member organizations that are different not only in the number of staff, but in the conditions of services as well, will be more and more important on the following main task groups: With Hungary's accession to the European Union the Association has became a member of the European Federation of National Associations of Water and Wastewater Services (EUREAU) and maintains relations with numerous Hungarian and foreign organizations.

Our organisation

The main organ of the Association is the General Assembly, which involves members and associated members. The Association is directed by a Presidium, which is re-elected every three years and is headed by the Chairman. The Association's management is based on the yearly membership fee, utilization of which is controlled by the Board of Supervision. Daily tasks are done by a Secretariat of a small staff headed by the General Secretary. The organisation's activity is supported by committees consisting of the best experts of the members.

The Hungarian Water Utility Sector

In Hungary public water services are provided by state-owned, municipal and jointly owned water utilities. The owner of the regional companies with a decisive participation is the State itself.

Conducted drinking water supply is available in every Hungarian township, thus water is drinkable everywhere.
Wastewater utilities, compared to advanced EU states, are still in considerable lag despite recent significant improvements. City waste water programs are close to completion, but in the capital, just as in some other cities and townships investments of several hundred billion HUF are necessary to be implemented. Of the 3100 settle-ments there are 800 the sewage system of which bears the liquid wastes of half of the country's flats.

The Hungarian Water Utility Sector in the EU

On 1st May 2004 Hungary has become member of the EU.
The State Program for Improvement of Drinking Water Quality aims to secure drinking water quality, which meets the European requirements by 2009. The implementation cost of this program is 200 billion HUF.

EUREAU - European union of national associations of water suppliers and waste water services

The Hungarian Water Utility Association (MaViz) is a full member of the EUREAU since Hungary joined the EU in 2004, after having examined the activity of this European organization for years as an Observing Member.

In February 2005 the Board Meeting of the EUREAU took place in Budapest, organized by MaViz. The members of the board also had the opportunity to share their experiences with the directors and secretaries of Eastern European Water Utility Associations within the frames of a Get-to-Know meeting.

Next, in October 2006 the MaViz hosted the EUREAU1 Committee meeting in Budapest.

In October 2007 our Association is looking forward to greet the EUREAU2 Committee members in Budapest on their next meeting.



IWA - International Water Association



The Hungarian Water Utility Association is a member of IWA since 2004.



Central and Eastern European Collaboration Agreement

The MaVíz - Hungarian Water Utility Association, the ARA - Asociata Romana a Apei, the BHWWA - Bosnia & Herzegovina Water Work Association, the BWA – Bulgarian Water Association, the SOVAK - Sdružení oboru vodovodů a kanalizací České republiky, the West-slovakian water association a.s., Západoslovenská vodárenská spoločnost’ a.s., the SMWA – Serbia and Montenegro Waterworks Association and the AVS - Slovak Water Association signed a Collaboration agreement in 2006 for developing their relationship.

The purpose of the agreement was to develop the agreeing countries’ water and sewerage services, contribute and strengthen the achievement of European Union directives. A successful cooperation is necessary between the agreeing countries’ professional-social associations and professional experts in order to fulfil the requirements and the regulations relating the water and sewerage network.
The agreeing parties in the interest of the above mentioned purposes – with respect of their country’s traditions- agreed to practice their agreement according to the regulations, legislation and tradition of the agreeing countries’ social organizations.
The agreeing parties in their activity pursue to accomplish the other parties’ objectives in consideration with the interest, traditions, and operation of the other country. The present agreement is to set up the practical parts of the cooperation.

By signing the collaboration agreement the parties declared, that they consider this agreement as a start for further common activities, and endeavour to fill the collaboration with content as well as improve and extend it.

Our Professional Journal - Vizmű Panoráma

Our association publishes the Vizmu Panorama 5 times a year not including 2 or 3 special issues, which are related to special events, like the yearly ÖKO-TECH Exhibition in Budapest or the biannual ÖKO-AQUA Water Industry Conference and Exhibition held in Debrecen.

The journal informs the water utility companies of the recent professional news, it discusses actual  topics, professional  questions. Companies have the possibility to inform the market of their achievements, their events, conferences and products.
Governmental bodies, municipalities and other authorities, universities receive this journal regularly as well as all utility members of our association.
The language of the journal is mainly Hungarian, but there are short summaries after the main topics in English.
